I can be the knife in your back
The noose around your neck
The bullet right through your skull
But I'd rather be the force of my spoken word
Let our voices form the weapons

Band needs to come to the states. This song worked so well in the PRIDE highlight I was watching earlier. Vid fucks up the layout, but I don't care. Oh, and fuck this cough.

Walkabout

First day of classes today, and it went pretty good, sans parking. English seems fun, but going to be very demanding. The professor seems really cool. She looks like a hipster haha. History is probably going to be my favorite class. The professor is probably the funniest one I've ever had. Made learning about the Civil War interesting and enjoyable for once. His slave jokes were hilarious. My music class is going to be a sinch, as all I have to do is listen to music, discuss it on the boards, and go to a show and write about my experience. Let's hope tomorrow will be like today, as the ever dreaded math class is tomorrow, but philosophy with Danny should be fun.

Fall is going to be very busy, moreso than Summer, and I think I like it that way. Besides school, there's a shit ton of shows coming up. My projected list:

1. FYF Fest @ LA National Park, September 5 (tix bought)

Notables:
Converge
DEP
Glass Candy
Mika Miko
Japanther
Telepathe

Throwing Copper

Touche Amore's "...To the Beat of a Dead Horse" came in today, along with my Banner tank top. Getting packages in the mail is one of the best feelings ever. Anyways, I've been listening to this record nonstop. The lyrics probably have to be my favorite parts of it. Plus they were printed on the back of this massive fold out poster. Can't wait to see them in the Fall with Thursday and TFOT. I pretty much know this record word for word now, and will continue listening for the rest of the night, then off to Inglorious Basterds.

8.06.2009

Solar Doom

Saw Iron Age last night. Headbanged like a madman throughout the whole set. They didn't play for that long, probably because there were 5 other bands before. If I can remember, I think their set order was Burden of Empire, We're Dust, Dispossessed, Sleeping Eye of the Watcher, A Younger Earth and Arcana. Pretty much everything I wanted to see.

The other bands were solid too. Mammoth Grinder ruled, with Wacker getting pretty into them haha. Some hardcore kids were like wtf. Downpresser and Creatures were good. Power Trip was the other band I wanted to check out. Stoked they played "Vultures". Felt bad for Dead Hours because there was like 5 kids in attendance at the time, including me and Wacker. Not that many people showed up overall, I'd say about 60 kids max. Still pretty fun though.

Testing the Limits of Infinite

It's already the midway point of 2009, and great music just keeps cranking out. The new Reign Supreme is no exception. Start to finish, it's a 13 track ass kicking. I was pretty stoked to find out my two favorites from the demo, "Apostle" and "A Ghost in This City" were remastered. Instantly made this a favorite for album of the year. Blasting the last breakdown in "Apostle" full volume while driving pretty much gave me a disregard for human life at the time. The new songs are also super solid, with guest vocals from Travis of This is Hell and Andrew of CBK. "In Absentia" and "Persevere and Overcome" have to be my favorite new songs. Plenty of mosh parts, a couple singalongs and just overall chaos on this record. Iron Age's "The Sleeping Eye" has just slid into 2nd. Rgn Sup is now currently my favorite of 2009, but that may change when I hear the new Converge. For now though, this record will get heavy play from me.

In other events, saw Transformers 2 the other day. Somewhat underwhelmed, but also still enjoyable. My complaints had to be the twins, so fucking annoying. They were funny at times, but that kind of humor gets really old. I was hoping they would get annihilated by Devastator. SPEAKING OF, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHIT. GIVING HIM BALLS, GETTING HIS ASS KICKED SOMEWHAT BY THE TWINS, AND BEING KILLED BY A FUCKING LASER OFF A BOAT. BULLLLLLLLLSHIT. Anyways, the main battle was someone disappointing, as I thought it would be more epic. The Fallen died so easily. Things I liked though was Soundwave, as I thought he was portrayed pretty good. I lost it at "Soundwave Acknowledges". Also, I thought it was badass how Prime "went out" halfway. Goddamn impaled and shot through the chest. Overall, it was entertaining, but still terrible.

Oh, and goodnight sweet prince to MJ.

Old Reliable

1 more baby.

After a somewhat terrible start to Summer, today things finally went my way. Worked at my sister's store for a bit and got paid. Picked up a Silver Surfer on a mini nerd run. Also, had all the fraud charges on my debit reversed, which was a big relief. Plus in music news, At the Drive-In may reunite since Cedric is willing to take his head out of his ass. Finally, the Lakers won tonight. Amazing game throughout the second half. I thought it was over when Howard got fouled, but so glad he bricked those free throws. Derek Fisher is my hero. Done so much for this ball club, especially tonight. He may be in a slump, but he hits em when they count.

Lyrical Ammunition For Scene Warfare

Somewhat active weekend. Went on a mini nerd run, and came up empty. I went to go see Dave, Erik and Andy play later that night, and I have to say great job guys! You guys were the only good band up there. The nu-metal band, acoustic buttbuddies and the RHCP snoozefest were terrible. You guys' sound was so clean and polished. Can't wait for the EP. After that, we went to watch Up! with, Oli, Jack, Leyna, Dave and Erik. That movie was so depressing. The relationship montage in the beginning and the part about Russell's parents. My God. Russell= my little bro. I'm going to give him so much shit for that hahahaha.

Anyways, I didn't go to Cro-Mags tonight since I had to drive my mom to LAX. Going to the Philippines for about a week. Got back home and fixed up a homemade pot roast sandwich. Currently enjoying that and blasting Magrudergrind. New album=mind=blown. Another candidate for AOTY. The riff in "Bridge Burner" makes me want to destroy. So much good stuff out this year including the new Converge. Time to start bedroom moshing.

Watch Me Sink

FUCK.

"Once the Fall rolls around, we can't really do this band the way we would prefer to anymore. Knowing this deadline of ours and having a whole world tour already booked, we'd like to take advantage of the chance to say goodbye to all the people we have met around the world over the years.

So, please come check us out in the remaining months on our little trip around the globe. So far Asia has been a wonderful experience and we're very happy to have had the chance to meet so many kind people and look forward to the rest of Asia.

We will be playing our last show on this year's National Edge Day on October 17th 2009 with a bunch of our friends bands and a sweet guest. It will be somewhere T accessible in the Boston area. It will also be a benefit for a women's shelter in New Bedford, MA, run by my kind mother.

It's been a nice 7 years and we'd like to thank all the unique hardcore kids and bands we have encountered. And in the words of DFJ, thanks to all the shit talkers for all the material to get off on. But, really....we have met so many wonderful people who we'll just never forget.

It's been so great. Take care and hope to see you over the next couple months."

I'm losing sleep

I'm losing friends. I've got a love hate love with the city I'm in. I'll count the hours, having just one wish. If I'm doing fine there's no point to this

Touche Amore is one of the more interesting bands playing at S&F. Their screamo sound will definitely be a change of pace from the rest of the bands playing, so I want to see this for myself. Plus the singer looks like a skinnier Jay Pepito. Also the Title Fight set will probably be one of the most fun ones of the night.

This is the best video I can find of my favorite song from them.

3.30.2009

The Sleeping Eye

Iron Age's new record is already an album of the year candidate and the track listing isn't even out yet. First think that came to my mind when listening to this was "UR MOSHIN'". Crossover thrash/hardcore is so fun. Until I hear the rest of Jeniferever's "Spring Tides" and Reign Supreme's "Testing the Limits of Infinite" (which is pretty crushing), The Sleeping Eye is in the front running.

The influx of great new hardcore albums and bands makes me even more excited for The Sound and Fury '09. Also, from what I've read, United Blood '09 was fucking amazing. The pipe break/flood during Pulling Teeth (new album shreds), the beat down of the bro and his car, and the crazy pizza guy, it surely was a weekend to remember. Hopefully the same experience can be had during S&F. The lineup is already worth the price and only half of the bands have been announced. July is just too far away.

Oh, and thanks for the tip off Danny haha

Fucking B9boards, probably the funniest things I've seen all week. Rather listen to covers like this than some schmuck with an acoustic guitar playing "I'm Yours" in hopes to be some sort of fucking Youtube celebrity.

Motherfuckin' Kogi

Tonight, Oli, Joe, Jack and I hit up the Kogi in Santa Monica. We were the second group there, as 1 guy was waiting in the lot already. Anthony and Jennifer also met us up there. As time went, the masses started to arrive and Oli was proclaiming his spot as first. During the wait we met this guy who was pretty chill. He actually became part of our group in line ahah. He was over at the Alibi room on Washington, but was too packed and decided to come here. The people around there were so cool. Random convos here and there.

Anyways, the truck arrived around 10:30ish, as we all stalked it's every move. We were greeted kindly and enthusiastically which was a plus. What made this even better was that I was the first one to order! No fucking 1hr+ wait for us! The guy who actually arrived before us was last in line because he fell asleep in his car. He probably didn't get any, which fucking blows. Basically, a short summary would be that the tacos were amazing! I'm not going to go too much into detail as I already did in my Yelp! review. Who knew such a combo like this would be great.

To finish off the night, we head off to 7-11 since the drinks were fucking expensive, and as we pulled in we knew this area was shady. Low lifes, stoners, guys who we assumed were dealers, and transients all were present. When we walked out, these guys were arguing about cigarettes, when one of them says the greatest line ever invented as he walked off angrily

Guy: Do you know Chata? WELL THEN CHATA FUCK UP!

A fucking classic. One that will go down in my history book. An amazing line to top off a great night.

With Farts on Fire

Would've blogged about this earlier, but I had HW and shit.

Yesterday of course was Thy's party at Oli's. Got there at around 9ish with Lyle after watching UFC 96. It was us and a bunch LQ people at first, but then the dudes finally showed up. Quite a surprise seeing Manny and Johnny there. A lot of faces I haven't seen in a while, including Don and Steve. As our group slowly started to appear at the party, we felt more comfortable. Even Thomas and Anthony showed up as well. Mike and Danny still weren't here yet, in which they missed both Manny and Johnny.

Meanwhile, I finally broke the streak. 1 day after my 8 month anniversary, I took a shot of what I think was Captain Morgan's. I only had a total of 5 shots, but I could feel a slight buzz. My tolerance has gone wayyy down. Meat, Jlam, Steve, Keane and Don were all pretty buzzed or drunk. Mike and Danny got there a little too late and did not have anything to drink. Danny didn't want to anyways, since he was DA DA. One other note is that Christopher Nguyen from Northcutt made an appearance. Haven't seen that guy in a LONG time.

It was maybe around 12ish that the party was called off because it was supposedly going to get raided. Everyone pretty much bailed and went to Steven Lee's or Keane's house. Buzzed, Lyle took my car with me, Tim and Thy riding along. Got some sober up food at JITB, fucking 16 tacos. Thy is officially the first person to throw up in my car.

We got there at Keane's, where Don was yakking, and then all the other guys arrived at well. Talk about random crap, while Meat, Steve and Don were all out of it. Probably the greatest moment of the night then occurred when I took my lighter and farted on it. A massive flame erupted, causing my pants to almost set fire and the lulz to ensue. Never seen anybody else laugh so hard. I did it again, but the flame was much smaller, and after that we all headed off.

I took Thy back to her car along with Tim and Lyle who drove her car. They dropped her off and then picked them up and drove them home. Pretty much a fucking hilarious night.

3.06.2009

"What the fuck, it's name is Clefairy" No dick, it's Wigglytuff.

Watched the Watchmen at 3:30 am this morning. I picked up Meat and Oli and headed out to the Spectrum at around 11:30ish. Met up with Mike who there with Vinh since 8. Lyle even stopped by for a visit too. We were almost in front of the line. Maybe like a good 10-15 people in front of us. The people around us were really cool, except for this typical, obnoxious fat super geek. Some gangster dude who stole posters and drank Sparks was fucking funny. God I love nerds. Anyways, we all had something to do to kill time. Mike and Vinh watched the Office on his Macbook, Oli was playing games on his Iphone, and Meat and I were training our Pokemon respectively.

We finally got in the theater around 2ish, and then in the actual IMAX room at around 3. During that time span, Meat and I failed as guardians of the sacred gold water fountain, which was defiled by the geek posted above. As we finally got in, we found seats easily in this behemoth of a theater. Everyone was waiting for the damn music to shut off so the movie would finally start. As when it finally did, we were disappointed that only one trailer was shown, which was for Harry Potter. Fast-forwarding, The movie itself was really good. Loved pretty much most of the characters. Rorschach was a fucking badass as predicted and Ozymandias was so douchey, it made him not douchey. Surprisingly, Ozy was Meat's favorite character, but that did not stop him from criticizing his name. "All of them had fucking cool names, but Ozymandias? What the fuck shit was that". Haha anyways, you gotta love Dr. Manhattan's nuclear blue penis of death and Nite Owl banging the crap outta the Silk Spectre. Also, at first I thought the Comedian was a prick, but as the story went on, he became more badass.

The movie finished at around 6 and when we exited the theatre, it was somewhat sunny. Haha shit, as I dropped off Oli and Meat, we saw kids walking to school. I got home and KTFO, and woke up at 2:30. I'm still dead and probably won't do anything else today.

Edward Blake: God damn I love working on American soil, Dan. Ain't had this much fun since Woodward and Bernstein. Congress is pushing through some new bill that's gonna outlaw masks. Our days are numbered. Till then it's like you always say, we're society's only protection.
Dan Dreiberg: From what?
Edward Blake: You kidding me? From themselves.

It's a fresh Spring, so let's sing

Ditched Health today for a Nerd day with the dudes. Waited on Danny to come over then we took off to pick up Mike then Oli and Meat at OCC. Their campus kicks GWC's ass. I think the parking lot is bigger than our school in general. We headed off to the Spectrum to pick up our Watchmen tickets. 3:30am showing in IMAX, fffffffffuuuuuu. It should be worth it though. Wandered a bit and ate, then headed back to the car. Meat was free styling, albeit very badly, but yet fucking hilarious.

Went over to Tustin to pick up some comics. Fuggin Meat did not know the Flash was even a comic book. SMH. Mike finished his Thor series, Danny couldn't buy his Starship Troopers since he was broke and Meat bought a Superman shirt and my comic since he owes me. $96 left on his tab. That was pretty much the end of the day. We were supposed to head off to the Block but I got tired and had to do some HW for my online math class.

So Winter is coming to a close sadly and Spring is approaching. This song is perfect for the upcoming weather. So amazing how they gathered all their friends in a tiny apartment to sing along and drink beer.

Spring Tides.

As you can see, my blogspot has been "Jeniferever'd" up for the time being. This is because their new album coming up on April 13th is my most anticipated this year. I've been into this band quite some time and I feel this might be their best work yet. There's something about them I love. Probably because their sound was perfectly described as "if Sigur Ros had a child with The Appleseed Cast", or maybe it's because there's never a bad time to listen to them. Anyways, the new songs on their myspace are too good. Plus the Bruce Springsteen cover is well, the only way I'll ever listen to Bruce Springsteen. If there was just ONE band from another country I wish would tour here, it would be them. They're slowly inching their way into my top 5.

Defeater - "Travels"

Very few concept albums have caught my interest throughout the story. Discovered this band earlier at a message board I post at. I rarely take recommendations, but this is an exception. When I started listening, the first track sucked me in. As each song continued, I read the lyrics, following this narrative along. The premise is very intriguing and flows very well unlike a lot of concept albums.

Basically, this album is about a story of a man from his birth to death. He deals immediately with the rejection and abuse of his father, alcoholism, debt, his dying mother, sibling rivalries, and things I won't spoil for you. For a hardcore album, this is pretty fucking amazing.

The musicianship perfectly complements the emotion being laid out. This is why I prefer emotional and melodic hardcore over the tough guy shit. Heavy yet melodic, and raw yet polished. I also found it really clever that in one of the songs, the narrator sees a transient playing a guitar on the street and at the last 2 minutes, it transitions to the acoustic song the man is playing. The end track "Cowardice" has some of the most dramatic build ups I've ever listened to in a hardcore song. Very fitting for the conclusion of this narrative.

If you're a fan of MLIW, Verse, and The Carrier, check this out. I think "Travels" replaces "Songs to Scream at the Sun" by Have Heart as my top hardcore album of '08.

"No judgment cast down this day, will set you free. You are forgiven my son, you are blessed and redeemed. You've found absolution here son, but only from me."

Summary for those who won't read the lyrics.

1. Blessed Burden
Birth of the protagonist in the family's run down apartment. The mother feels blessed while the father immediately rejects the son. He is an abusive drunk towards the mother, and while she prays for him to stop, he tells her that "god can't hear you, not down here. no one will save you because no one cares".

2. Everything went quiet
Fast forward to the man's childhood. He's with his older brother at the train tracks. He dares him to play chicken with an oncoming train. He tries, but bails out, and is basically shunned by his brother as " [he] can never live up to [him]". The train tracks will play a part later on.

3. Nameless Streets
The boy is wandering the streets of his broken town. He sees the homeless, thinking himself that will never be him. He remembers his addict mother, praying to her god and telling him to never leave her as the beatings continue from the drunkard father.

4. Forgiver Forgetter
The protagonist is a teen now. He awakes hearing yelling around the house. The father is saying the mother can't pay the rent because of her drug abuse. He comes to his mother's defense saying, all she did was raise him when his father was to drunk to. The father is offended, telling him he has nerve. The protag responds with "I never wanted to kill a man, like I want to kill you man." A fight ensues, with the protag killing his father. His mother screams in horror and his brother swears revenge. The protag abruptly leaves and his mother is now in God's hands.

5. The City By Dawn
The protagonist hops on a train to leave the city. He is trying to start over with nothing in his name.

6. Prophet in Plain Clothes.
The man has become homeless, something in the past he said he would never be. Wandering the streets in the snow and hopping from place to place, he is constantly barely getting by. He then sees a vagrant playing a guitar, singing "home is never home". This is something that will stick in his mind for the rest of his life.

7. Carrying Weight
Now wandering the country side, he is "carrying his own weight" around. Sleeping anywhere and everywhere possible, he still thinks about his mother. He is then taken up by a bunch of good Samaritans, telling him "redemption lies in an old farm house".

8. Moon Shine
They give the man words of wisdom. He is told he is not a man if he's always running from his problems. If he's got a battle back there, it's no reason to stay here. He decides to go back for his mother, telling himself he is not a "wicked man" and "don't you be like me".

9. The Blues
He hitches a ride with a local, and with a new found attitude, his "blues are dead and buried".

10. Debts.
He arrives at the slum he used to call home. Everything looked the same as before - broken and run down. He furiously goes back to his house, looking for his mother. His brother then appears and confronts him, telling him his addict mother is dead. The brother swears his revenge and calling the protag a selfish fuck for running away. He wants his life as pay back. With a gun to his head, the protag is lead back to the train tracks from his childhood. This time, things would be different as the protag would get the upper hand, throwing his brother into the oncoming train.

11. Cowardice
The man, now thinking to himself that there is no where left for him and is filled with regret, approaches the church. He confesses his sins to the priest, who says he has found absolution from him, but only him. Still distraught, the man goes on top of the bell tower, overlooking the city. He carves his name on the bell, so he can hear it when he goes straight to hell. With his final words filled with regret, "I ain't no wicked man", he jumps off the ledge, subsequently ending the story.

Nerd Days

need to happen more often, but don't due to lack of cash flow. Mike has his comics, Danny has his Warhammer, and I've got my action figures. Couple days ago was a success, and today somewhat. Found an extra Wraith, who went under the knife so to speak. Went from shit to the best figure ever. I'm probably going to go pick up the Tunnel Rat pack tomorrow if it's still there. I wish I grew up in the 80's.

2.08.2009

Tear Down These Walls.

So ANOTHER great hardcore band breaks up. Verse announced earlier today that their run has come to an end. This fucking blows since it's ANOTHER band I will never get to see live. Sean said

"this has been one of the most important things in our lives for quite a while now.
while it's sad to see it come to an end, we're all glad we can look back on some great experiences we have had, and wonderful people we have met throughout the years.

we want to thank everyone who has been a part of this, good or bad. it's been a pretty crazy trip.

peace out."

"The New Fury"

They've got themselves a new spin on the story,
twisted for one-sided glory.
Devastation soon becoming fuel for the masses new fury.
A greedy hand in the guise of a good man.
So threatening. So deafening. So silencing, that familiar stance.
The burden now passed to us,
we lose our footing but still try to stand.
No control.
No more rules.
Perpetual war for perpetual peace,
turn a blind eye to poverty while manufacturing new enemies.
The new slave's south of the border, murdered or overseas.
We still struggle with the fact
that one percent has ninety-nine on their knees.

Washington's drawing up war plans,
while there's still no hope for the homeless man.
No one should have to live under these men, iron fists with gun in hand.
No more control.
No more rules.
They try to make you and me live life by their design:
No free thought. No free speech. No peace of mind.
They make a move to confine.
But they'll never silence me as long as I can breathe.

Immolate Yourself.

Charlie Cooper of Telefon Tel Aviv has passed away at the age of 31. Along with Josh, he produced some of the best IDM and ambient music out there. It's truly sad to see an artist pass away this early. There are no details, except he was missing on the 21st and died on the 22nd. News was revealed yesterday.

I leave you with "The Birds", which just came off the new album that was released 2 days before his death.

Skramz

Recently, I've been getting back into the screamo genre. The legit shit, not the definition it has been contorted into today. Besides the basics like Saetia and Orchid, I've been looking deeper into genre. Hell, I didn't even know the Philippines had a screamo scene over there. From what I've listened to, there are the bands that stood out.

The Khayembii Communique
A Case of Grenada

These bands are great, but fuck, I've just also the discovered the French screamo scene. A lot of the bands I've discovered have a blend of post rock elements, which is always a plus in my book. I recommend

Amanda Woodward
Daitro
Sed Non Satiata
Aussitôt Mort

Aussitôt Mort is quickly becoming my favorite screamo band. It's screamo with a touch of sludge, so to speak.

My favorite song from them, "Percuté"

Oh Lawd

Fucking Roger Huerta, you're gorgeous and all, but how could you dump this?

No, no you live with it.

Timothy Ly's Giant Sleep Over Extravaganza. Staying in the dorm felt like a hotel. Before we got here though, I pulled an action stunt on the way by jumping over a divider and cutting off a guy while making a sharp turn to make the exit hahaha. Pretty chill couple of days. Pics will do the talking.
